On the Transport Select Committee, I quizzed Grant Shapps and Sir Peter Hendy about plans to modernise our railways. Passengers have faced poor punctuality and reliability for too long. The new Great British Railways body must start afresh and step up to the plate. Simpler, flexible fares is a really good start.
We had more good news this week as the Department for Transport pledged £3 million to build a new station at Marsh Barton in Exeter by 2024. The two-platform station, on the Exeter to Plymouth line, will better connect both sides of the Exe and boost employment opportunities. And not least, take cars off the busy roads going into the city.
