Over past eight months, we have heard phrases such as the ‘battle against coronavirus’, defeat the ‘invisible enemy’ and the ‘frontline’. All of which have echoed imagery of military conflict of previous generations.
Last week, the Prime Minister announced the largest investment in defence in the past 30 years. The budget will grow by £24 billion and will mean that we can invest in the defence of our nation in areas such as cyber, space and improve equipment to deal with threats from belligerent countries, such as Russia and China.
We must keep our country safe and I’m proud that East Devon is part of these efforts with the Royal Marines Commando Training Centre in Lympstone.
Devon is in Tier 2 and the Nightingale Hospital in Exeter has opened to take some of the burden that coronavirus is having on our NHS.
From next Wednesday, our high streets will be able to spring back to life. If we want our high street to survive and thrive, we must support our fantastic local shops to protect jobs and our economy. That’s why on Saturday, I will be promoting firms across East Devon on social media as part of the national Small Business Saturday campaign.
Crucially important to many people at this time of year, places of worship will re-open and we can also return to see live sport across the county. It will also be possible to hit the gym ahead of Christmas too.
However, the impact on the hospitality industry in Devon cannot be underestimated, especially given the time of year.
I have been contacted by a number of landlords and owners of pubs, restaurants and B&Bs across East Devon who are very concerned about the consequences of the new restrictions.
The government is offering additional support but many fear this may not be enough. I have written to the Chancellor requesting more targeted financial support for our hospitality industry. We can’t let it be last orders for the Great British Pub.
